K-pop star Kang Daniel is slated to make his small screen debut with Disney+’s new original series, “Rookies.”

The coming-of-age story about police academy students will be released in the first half of next year, according to Disney+, which will launch in Korea on Nov. 12.

In the drama, Kang plays Wi Seung-hyun, a law-abiding, passionate freshman whose life takes a drastic turn after encountering a troublemaker named Go Eun-kang at his school. Actress Chae Soo-bin, best known for her performance in the 2016 TV series, “Love in the Moonlight,” has taken on the role of Go.

The series will also feature other actors, such as Park Yoo-na and Lee Shin-young, who are expected to create synergy with Kang and Chae. Actor Kwak Si-hyang, who recently appeared on the popular SBS soap opera, “Lovers of the Red Sky,” will make a cameo appearance.

“Rookies” is directed by Kim Byung-soo, who was behind the success of the drama, “The Bride of the Habaek” (2017). The series’ writer is Lee Ha-na.

“This is my first attempt at acting, but most of my concerns melted away after reading the ‘Rookies’ script,” Kang said during Disney+’s Asia-Pacific (APAC) content showcase, Oct. 14. “What attracted me was the fact that the drama focuses on young people … It was great to see how the characters grow up as they go through ups and downs.”

Kang rose to stardom after winning the second season of Mnet’s audition program, “Produce 101,” in 2017, and joining the project group, Wanna One. He turned solo after the 11-piece act disbanded in 2018. Kang established his own agency, Konnect Entertainment, the following year.
