K-pop couple HyunA and DAWN, who went public with their romantic relationship in 2018, are generating a buzz with their first duet mini-album, “1+1=1,” which they released Thursday.

As of Friday afternoon, the lead single, “PING PONG,” nabbed the No. 20 spot on Bugs, a major music streaming platform here. Its music video also garnered more than 3 million views, while a clip featuring the couple’s performance of “PING PONG” on M COUNTDOWN ― a popular music show broadcast by cable channel Mnet ― hit 110,000 views.

Co-composed by HyunA and DAWN, “PING PONG” is a “moombahton-tinged” dance track about a couple in love. In its fairy-tale like music video, HyunA appears as a mermaid, while DAWN plays Peter Pan.

“It is an adorable song about a couple’s push-and-pull romance,” DAWN said during an online press conference, Thursday.

In the K-pop scene, where dating publically is considered almost a taboo for most young stars, it is hard to find a couple like HyunA and DAWN, who couldn’t care less about it.

The two were initially represented by Cube Entertainment, but they left the company in 2018 after confirming they were dating. Later, they inked a contract with P NATION, the record label founded by “Gangnam Style” (2012) artist PSY, together and, in 2019, released individual albums on the same day as well as holding a joint media conference.

In fact, during the 2019 press event, HyunA revealed that she and her boyfriend were “not quite compatible in terms of music styles,” but her thoughts seem to have changed over time.

“I thought I would never form a duo with DAWN, but we ended up doing so,” HyunA said during Thursday’s event. “Surprisingly, while we were gearing up for the album, we felt like we were made for each other… This time, we want to show off our chemistry on the stage as performers, not as a couple.”

“1+1=1” also carries three other tunes, including the R&B hip-hop track, “Deep Dive,” as well as “XOXO” and “I Know.”

“I think it is a groundbreaking album showcasing our distinctive styles,” HyunA said.
