TvN’s variety show “The Great Escape,” one of the longest-running shows of the network, has begun its fourth season, Sunday.
The season premiere of the escape room concept show scored a 2.8 percent viewership rating nationwide and 3 percent in the metropolitan area.

Created by Jung Jong-yeon, who led the game show “The Genius,” the show invites six cast members ― Kang Ho-dong, Kim Jong-min, Kim Dong-hyun, Shin Dong, Yoo Byung-jae, and P.O ― to solve escape challenges.
Each challenge has a different theme and plot, set in a different setting such as an abandoned hospital or other facility. The cast members must find clues and crack puzzles to complete the challenge and escape.
The show, since it started in 2018, has garnered a strong fan base among viewers for its large-scale challenges such as surviving a zombie virus outbreak and escaping a haunted house.
The first episode of season 4 picked up from the plots of the previous season’s last episode, about a genius scientist who invented a time machine. The cast members traveled back in time to a fictional town to find and rescue the scientist by tracing the clues.
Producer Jung revealed that the latest season will be a collection of the show’s universe.
“We always take into consideration the continuity of the plots from previous seasons, so with this season viewers will have fun seeing elements and concepts they enjoyed from different seasons,” he said during an online press conference for the show last week.
Despite picking up on the previous season’s challenges, the producer also noted that the production team always strives to try out new formats as challenges, adding that this season will also have different new episodes.
“Presenting something new is always one of the top priorities for variety show producers… so our team tried to come up with ideas to add something new to the show,” he noted.
“We need new challenges and different formats in order to lay the foundation for the next season after this, so we will keep pushing ourselves on that. This season will also have episodes unlike what you have seen in previous seasons.”

The producer added that the viewers’ feedback on the show helped the team to come up with new ideas and shape the challenges.
“The Great Escape is a type of show that viewers get immersed in as if they become part of the cast, solving challenges. And we take pride in that. So we are always urging viewers for feedback,” he said. “As we get a lot of response from the viewers, we have applied them in making the fourth season.”
The show has been known for using large-scale props and effects to create a realistic setting for each concept.
The producer hinted that the latest season will have an even greater upgrade in its scale. “The production costs increased slightly from season 3, which viewers might be able to notice,” he said. “Art and set decoration are like one of our main cast. It’s crucial in making this show interesting to viewers, so we always put efforts into bringing an upgrade to it.”
“The Great Escape 4” airs Sundays at 10:40 p.m.
