Shownu, 29, of K-pop boy group Monsta X is set to begin his alternative service to the required military duty on July 22, according to his management company, Starship Entertainment, Saturday.

Shownu will begin serving among social service personnel after weeks of basic military training. He cannot serve in the military itself because of a retinal detachment, which led him to have surgery on his left eye in 2020. The medical condition could cause floaters and flashes in his vision.

“He will start boot camp later this month and undergo three-week training before starting his duty,” Starship said. “The time and location of his enlistment will not be disclosed to the public due to COVID-19 concerns.”

Shownu also left a personal message to his followers on Monsta X’s fan community, Saturday.

“Thank you for allowing me to experience so many different things,” he wrote. “I hope you stay healthy and happy while I am doing my duty… Let’s meet up again soon.”

Shownu, whose real name is Son Hyun-woo, debuted as part of Monsta X in 2015 with the album, “Trespass.” The act rolled out several hits, including, “Dramarama (2017).” Shownu is the first Monsta X member to be enlisted.
