The Korean production of musical “Phantom” aims to bring solace to people amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
The fourth season of “Phantom,” which has been on stage at the Charlotte Theater in southern Seoul since March, is scheduled to run through June 27. It is Seoul-based EMK Musical Company’s first show this year.
Based on the 1910 French novel, “The Phantom of the Opera,” by Gaston Leroux, the musical is set in the Paris Opera House and follows young soprano Christine Daae who bumps into Erik, a mysterious masked man living beneath the opera house. “Phantom” is a world-famous musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Arthur Kopit, which premiered in the U.S. in 1991.
“For Erik, who is living under the theater, Christine is his shining light,” EMK’s CEO Um Hong-hyun said. “Likewise, I hope that the return of ‘Phantom’ can comfort us amid this darkness and help us revitalize our lives.”

“Phantom” opened in Korea in 1995. To build a stronger story, EMK added new numbers like “What Will I Do” and “I Will Find You” to the Korean production and included more ballet scenes to make it more visually appealing. Staged in 2018-19, its third season attracted 50,000 people during the first month of its opening.
The fourth season of “Phantom” boasts a star-studded cast ― Park Eun-tae, Kai and Kyuhyun of K-pop act Super Junior play Eric, while Kim So-hyun, Im Sun-hae, Lee Ji-hye and Kim Soo take the role of Christine.
Robert Johanson, an internationally-acclaimed musical director who was behind the success of the musical’s previous seasons, is helming the show again.
For the audience watching the show on Thursday and Sunday, English subtitles are offered on LCD monitors placed next to the stage.
